Compton was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the first round of 1977 Major League Baseball June Amateur Draft and received a $40,000 signing bonus.
He spent three seasons in the New York-Penn League. He played in 43 games for the Batavia Trojans during the 1977 season (.143/.275/.175). On December 5, 1977, Compton was traded to the Chicago Cubs and spent the 1978 (.093/.274/.093) and 1979 (.183/.409/.244) seasons with the Geneva Cubs.
He played in seven games for the 1980 Quad Cities Cubs in the Midwest League and was out of baseball.
Compton graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1982 and became a certified public accountant.
