Maxwell was signed by the Boston Red Sox in 1947 as an amateur free agent after playing for Western Michigan University (known as Western Michigan College Education at the time) and serving in the U.S. Army. He played in 92 games for the 1947 Wellsville Nitros (17 home runs, .354 batting average) before being promoted to the Roanoke Red Sox in the Piedmont League.
He played in the minors for parts of seven seasons and 14 seasons in the majors with the Boston Red Sox (1950-54), Baltimore Orioles (1955), Detroit Tigers (1956-62) and Chicago White Sox (1962-64).
He was inducted in the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 1997.
