Former PONY (New York-Penn) League prospect George Lerchen was born on this date in 1922. He played for the Jamestown Falcons in 1942 and 1946.

Lerchen played in the majors for the Detroit Tigers (1952) and the Cincinnati Reds (1953).
 
He died on March 26, 2014, at the age of 91. See obituary.

Former Pennsylvania-Ontario-New York (PONY) League prospect Carl Sawatski was born on this date in 1927. He played for the Bradford Blue Wings in 1945.

He played for 11 seasons in the majors with the Chicago Cubs (1948, ’50, '53), Chicago White Sox (1954), Milwaukee Braves (1957-58), Philadelphia Phillies (1958-59), and St. Louis Cardinals (1960-63).  

After his playing career Sawatski was general manager of the minor league Arkansas Travelers and then president of the Southern League from 1976 to 1991. 

Sawatski died on November 24, 1991, at the age of 64.

Happy Birthday (71st) to former New York-Penn League prospect Dwight Evans. He played in 34 games for the Jamestown Falcons in 1969.

Evans went on to a 20 year major league career with the Boston Red Sox (1972-90) and Baltimore Orioles (1991). He was a three time All-Star and received 8 Gold Gloves and two Silver Slugger awards. Evans appeared in the World Series in 1975 and 1986. 

He was inducted into the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2000.
