Hargrove played in the major leagues for 12 seasons with the Texas Rangers (1974-78), San Diego Padres (1979), and Cleveland Indians (1979-85). He was the American League Rookie of the Year in 1974 and played in the 1975 All-Star game. 

After his playing career he managed in the minor leagues for three seasons and in the majors for 16 seasons with the Cleveland Indians (1991-99), Baltimore Orioles (2000-03), and Seattle Mariners (2005-07).
