Today's New York-Penn League Birthday: Chuck Harmon (Olean Oilers, 1949-51)

Former PONY (New York-Penn) League prospect Chuck Harmon was born on this date in 1929, in Washington, Indiana.

Harmon played three seasons for the Olean Oilers, batting .351 in 1949, .374 in 1950, and .375 in 1951.

In 1954, he made his major league debut and was the first African-American player for the Cincinnati Reds. He played in the majors during four seasons for Cincinnati (1954-56), the St. Louis Cardinals (1956-57), and Philadelphia Phillies (1957).

After his playing career, he worked as a part-time scout for the Cleveland Indians and Atlanta Braves.

Harmon died on March 19, 2019, in Golf Manor, Ohio at the age of 94.
