He was drafted by the New York Mets in the 22nd round of the 1982 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft and pitched in 23 games for the 1982 Little Falls Mets (77.2 IP, 3-6, 3.71 ERA, 29 BB, 77 SO).

Gardener went on to an eight year major league career with the New York Mets (1984-85), Boston Red Sox (1986-90), San Diego Padres (1991), Kansas City Royals (1991).
