McCullough played in the majors for 15 seasons with the Chicago Cubs (1940-43, '46-'48, '53-'36) and Pittsburgh Pirates (1949-52). He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II (1944-45).
After he retired as a player, McCullough managed for several seasons in the minor leagues and coached for the Washington Senators, Minnesota Twins, New York Mets, and San Diego Padres.
He died on September 18, 1982, at the age of 65.
