Former NYPL Prospects Listed in Baseball America's Prospect Handbook (part 4 - Lowell)

It's that time of year. I'm going through my copy of the 2019 Prospect Handbook published by Baseball America. It is sold out at the publisher's website, but still available at Amazon.

Here are the former Lowell Spinners' who are included in the Boston Red Sox top 30 prospects list. Link to their Baseball Reference page by clicking on the player's name.

1. Bobby Dalbec, third baseman (2016). Batted .386/.427/.674 in 34 games for the Spinners. Finished the 2018 season with the AA Portland Sea Dogs. Was a non-roster invitee to spring training this season.

2. Michael Chavis, infielder (2018). Played in five games for the Spinners last season after an 80 game suspension for a postive PED test. Is on 40-man roster and was optioned to AAA Pawtucket on March 12, 2019.

3. Darwinzon Hernandez, pitcher (2016). Was 3-5 (4.10 ERA) in 14 starts with the Spinners. Made it to AA Portland in 2018. On the 40-man roster and should start the 2019 back at Portland.

4. Jay Groome, pitcher (2016-17). Played briefly for Spinners during two seasons. Did not play in 2018 after having Tommy John surgery in May. Not expected to see any action until the middle of the 2019 season.

7. Tanner Houck, pitcher (2017). First round draft pick in 2017 out of the University of Missouri. Had 10 starts with the Spinners and was 0-3, 3.63 ERA, 25 SO, 8 BB in 22 IP. Spent 2018 season with Salem in the Carolina League.

8. Mike Shawaryn, pitcher (2016). Had six starts for the Spinners (0-1, 2.87 ERA) after being selected in the fifth round of the 2016 draft out of the University of Maryland. Was a non-roster invitee to spring training and should be at AAA Pawtucket this season.

10. C.J. Chatham, shortstop (2016). Drafted in the second round of the 2016 draft out of Florida Atlantic University. Played in 27 games for the Spinners (4 HR, 21 RBI, .745 OPS). Non-roster invitee to Red Sox spring training. Should return to AA Portland to start 2019 season.

11. Durbin Feltman, pitcher (2018). Pitched in four games for the Spinners (4 IP, 0-0, 0.00 ERA and WHIP) before being promoted to Greenville. Finished season with Advanced A Salem in the Caroina League. Expected to start 2019 with AA Portland.

12. Jarren Duran, outfielder/infielder (2018). Drafted in the seventh round of the 2018 draft out of California State-Long Beach. Was promoted to Greenville at playing in 37 games for the Spinners (2 HR, 20 RBI, .941 OPS).

14. Brandon Howlett, third baseman (2018). Drafted in the 21st round out of Lakeland (Florida) High School. He played in five games for the Spinners (.133/.381/.400) at the end of the season after being promoted from the rookie league Gulf Coast Red Sox. Will probably start season a Greenville.

17. Travis Lakins, pitcher (2015). Pitched in one game for Lowell Spinners in 2015. He spent the 2018 season with the Portland Sea Dogs and Pawtucket Red Sox. Lakins is on the Red Sox 40-man roster and was optioned to Pawtucket on March 12, 2019.

18. Denyi Reyes, pitcher (2017). He was 9-0, 1.45 ERA, 0.952 WHIP in 15 starts for the Spinners. Made it to Salem in the Carolina League in 2018. Is on the Red Sox 40-man roster and was optioned to the Portland Sea Dogs on March 12, 2019.

19. Nick Northcut, third baseman (2018). Assigned to the Gulf Coast League Red Sox after being drafted in the 11th round of the 2018 draft. Played in six games for the Spinners after being reassigned in August. May start season in Lowell or Greenville.

21. Josh Ockimey, first baseman (2015). Played in 56 games for Lowell in 2015 (.266/.349/.422). Finished the 2018 season at Pawtucket. Was a non-roster invitee to spring training and will return to Pawtucket this season.

22. Kutter Crawford, pitcher (2017). Was drafted in the 16th round of the 2017 draft out of Florida Gulf Coast University and played in one game for the Spinners. Pitched for Greenville and Salem in 2018.

24. Chase Shugart, pitcher (2018) Drafted in the 12 round of the 2018 draft out of the University of Texas. Had one start for the Spinners and pitched three innings. Look for him at Salem in the Carolina League this season.

28. Sam Travis, first baseman/outfielder (2014). Drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the second round of the 2014 draft, he played in 40 games for the Spinners (.333/.364/.448). Travis is on the 40-man roster and has seen limited action with Red Sox during the last two seasons. Will probably begin 2019 at Pawtucket.

29. Brett Netzer, second baseman (2017). Drafted in the third round of the 2017 draft, Netzer played in 22 games for the Spinners (.317/.376/.390) before being promoted to Greenville. Spent 2018 with Salem. Will probably start the 2019 season with the AA Portland Sea Dogs.

30. Yoan Aybar, pitcher (2016-18). Signed as a free agent as an outfielder out of the Dominican Republic, Aybar didn't hit enough in his first four seasons, so he is now a pitcher. He played for the Spinners as an outfielder in 2016 and 2017 and pitched in two games for them in 2018. 

NOTE: One player on the Red Sox top 30 came thru the New York-Penn League, but did not play for the Spinners.

15. Colten Brewer, pitcher (2013 Jamestown Jammers). Drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2011 draft, he pitched in three games for the Jammers in 2013. He was signed as a free agent by the San Diego Padres on November 22, 2017 and appeared in 11 games for them in 2018. Brewer was traded to the Red Sox on November 20, 2018, and is on the Red Sox 40-man roster.
