Today's Birthday: Don Zimmer, Hornell Dodgers (1950)

Former PONY League prospect Don Zimmer was born on this date in 1931. He played for the 1950 Hornell Dodgers and was awarded the league's Most Valuable Player award.

Zimmer played in the majors during 12 seasons with the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers (1954-59, '63), Chicago Cubs (1960-61), New York Mets (1962), Cincinnati Reds (1962), and Washington Senators (1963-65). 

After he retired as a player, he managed in the minors (1967-70), and was a coached and managed in the majors from 1971 to 2003 (see complete list at this link). He was a senior advisor with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays/Rays from 2004 to 2014.

Zimmer died on June 4, 2014, at the age of 83.
