Madlock played in the majors for 15 seasons with the Texas Rangers (1973), Chicago Cubs (1974-76), San Francisco Giants (1977-79), Pittsburgh Pirates (1979-85), Los Angeles Dodgers (1985-87), Detroit Tigers (1987).
He was named to the 1974 Topps Rookie Team and was a National League All-Star in 1975, '76, '81, and '83 (MVP in 1975). He was the National League batting average leader in 1975, '76, '81, and 83, and was a member of the 1979 World Champion Pittsburgh Pirates.
