Cooper pitched in the majors for the Minnesota Twins (1981-82), Toronto Blue Jays (1983), and New York Yankees (1985).

After his playing career, he coached in the Chicago White Sox organization with several minor league teams and was the pitching for the White Sox from 2002 until 2020.
