Former New York-Penn League manager Steve Gromek (Erie Sailors, 1958) was born on this date in 1920. He managed the Erie Sailors to a 53-72 record in 1958.

He pitched in the majors during 17 seasons for the Cleveland Indians (1941-53) and Detroit Tiger (1953-57). He was on the 1945 American League All-Star team and was the winning pitcher in 1 game in the 1948 World Series.
Gromek died on March 12, 2002, at the age of 82.
