He pitched in the majors for the New York Yankees (1956, ’59-’62), Washington Senators (1963), Cincinnati Reds (1963) and California Angels (1965-67).
Coates was elected to the Virginia Hall of Fame in 1994. He died on November 15, 2019 at the age of 87.
