Former PONY (New York-Penn) League prospect Jim Coates was born on this date in 1932. He pitched for the Olean Yankees in 1952 (13-15, 3.19 ERA).
He pitched in the majors for the New York Yankees (1956, ’59-’62), Washington Senators (1963), Cincinnati Reds (1963) and California Angels (1965-67).
Coates was elected to the Virginia Hall of Fame in 1994. He died on November 15, 2019 at the age of 87.
