Today's Birthday

Former PONY (New York-Penn since 1957) League prospect Jerry Coleman was born on this date in 1924.

He played for the 1942 Wellsville Yankees prior to entering the military during World War II (1943-45). He continued his minor league career in 1946 and went on to play for the New York Yankees for 9 seasons (1949-57). He played in the 1950 All-Star game and played in 6 World Series for the Yankees (1949, '50, '51, '55, '56 & '57).

After he retired as a player, he was a broadcaster for several years and was manager of the San Diego Padres in 1980. Coleman died on January 5, 2014 at the age of 89.
