Hoffman played in the majors during 9 seasons with the Boston Red Sox (1980-87), Los Angeles Dodgers (1987), and California Angels (1989).
After he retired as a player, Hoffman managed in the minors in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization. He was the interim manager for the Dodgers during the 1998 season and was on their coaching staff for 7 seasons. He served as the San Diego Padres third base coach from 2006 to 2020.
