Lary pitched in the majors for 12 seasons with the Detroit Tigers (1954-64), New York Mets (1964, '65), Milwaukee Braves (1964), and Chicago White Sox (1965). He was an American League All-Star in 1960 and '61 and was a Gold Glove winner in 1961. He was known as "The Yankee Killer" for his ability to beat the New York Yankees.
After his playing career, he owned a used car business in Alabama. Lary died on December 14, 2017, at the age of 87.
