He was signed out of high school by the Kansas City Athletics in 1959 and assigned to the Olean A's (.192/.236/.308).
After five seasons in the minors, Harrelson made his major league debut with Kansas City Athletics in 1963. He played nine seasons in the majors with Kansas City (1963-66, '67), Washington Senators (1966-67), Boston Red Sox (1967-69), and Cleveland Indians (1969-71).
Following his retirement, he played professional golf, briefly served as the Chicago White Sox general manager (1985-86) and was a longtime major league broadcaster with the Boston Red Sox and Chicago White Sox.
