On this date in New York-Penn League History: January 14, 1964

Gene Baker was named manager of the Batavia Pirates for the 1964 season. Baker managed Batavia in 1961, becoming the first African-American manager in minor league history.

Baker played in the major leagues during 8 seasons with the Chicago Cubs (1953-57), Pittsburgh Pirates (1957-58, '60-'61).
