Part 5 - The 2015 New York-Penn League Champion West Virginia Black Bears - Where are they now?

The West Virginia Black Bears won the 2015 New York-Penn League Championship in their first season after the franchise relocated from Jamestown, New York. Forty-five Pirates prospects were part of the championship season. Here’s the fifth and final article taking a look at what happened to everyone who played on that team. Edgar Santana, 2015
Edgar Santana pitched in 14 games for the Black Bears until being promoted to the West Virginia Power (South Atlantic League) on August 9, 2015. He began the 2016 season with the Bradenton Marauders (Florida State League) and was assigned to the AA Altoona Curve (Eastern League) on May 10, 2016. On August 1, 2016, Santana was promoted to the AAA Indianapolis Indians (International League). After a strong performance in the Arizona Fall League (0.00 ERA, 18 SO, 2 BB, 0.951 WHIP in 13.2 IP), he was a non-roster invitee to the Pirates 2017 Spring Training. Currently with the Indianapolis Indians. Could make his first appearance at PNC Park later this summer.

Tate Scioneaux began the 2016 season with the West Virginia Power (South Atlantic League) until being assigned to the Bradenton Marauders (Florida State League) on May 3, 2016. Currently pitching for the AA Altoona Curve (Eastern League).

Mitchell Tolman was selected in the 7th round of the 2015 draft out of the University of Oregon. He played in 119 games for the West Virginia Power in 2016 and is currently assigned to the Bradenton Marauders (.243/.379/.358)

Brandon Waddell was a 5th round draft pick out of the University of Virginia in 2015. Began the 2016 season with the Bradenton Marauders until his promotion to the Altoona Curve on May 3, 2016. Assigned to the Altoona Curve again this season. Came off the disabled list on May 4, 2017.

Daniel Zamora was selected in the 40th round of the 2015 draft out of SUNY Stony Brook. He pitched in 21 games for the West Virginia Power in 2016. Currently assigned to the Bradenton Marauders.

Wyatt Toregas Bobblehead, 2016
Wyatt Toregas managed the Black Bears in the 2015 and 2016 seasons. Currently managing the West Virginia Power. Honored in 2016 as the first West Virginia Black Bears Bobblehead.

Cooper the Bear, 2015
Cooper continues as the Black Bears Mascot at all home games at Monongalia County Ballpark. He will have his own Bobblehead Night this season on Thursday, July 20.

Pepperoni Rolls, 2015
Pepperoni Rolls (Hot Pepper Hank, Double Stuffed Dave, Pepperoni & Cheese Patty) are back for a third season of racing between innings. The big question here - will Double Stuffed Dave win his first race during the 2017 season?

Part 4 - The 2015 New York-Penn League Champion West Virginia Black Bears - Where are they now?

The West Virginia Black Bears won the 2015 New York-Penn League Championship in their first season after the franchise relocated from Jamestown, New York. Ryan Nagle played in 111 games with the Class A West Virginia Power (South Atlantic League) in 2016 (.247/.310/.318). Currently at extended spring training in Bradenton.

Dovydas Neverauskas pitched in one game for the Black Bears in 2015 during a rehab assignment. Started the 2016 season with AA Altoona Curve (Eastern League) before being promoted to AAA Indianapolis Indians (International League) on June 15. Began the 2017 at Indianapolis and had a brief stint with the Pittsburgh Pirates (April 24-26) before returning to Indianapolis.

 Kevin Newman was the first round draft pick by the Pirates in 2015. He was promoted to the West Virginia Power on August 9, 2015 after hitting .226/.281/.340 in 38 games with the Black Bears. Played in 41 games with the Bradenton Marauders (.366/.428/.494) in the Florida State League in 2016. Promoted to the Altoona Curve on June 18, 2016. Played in 61 games with the Curve (.288/.361/.378). He was a non-roster invitee to the Pirates 2017 Spring Training. Newman is playing for the Altoona Curve this season and is hitting .248/.309/.336.

Andy Otamendi appeared in seven games for the Black Bears in 2015 before being promoted the Bradenton Marauders on July 23, where he pitched in 25 games. Released by the Pittsburgh Pirates organization on June 20, 2016 .

Juan Luis Paula pitched for the Bristol Pirates in the Appalachian League (Rookie) and the Black Bears in 2016, before being released by the Pittsburgh Pirates organization on December 21, 2016.

Logan Ratledge played in 85 games for the West Virginia Power in 2016, before being assigned to the Bradenton Marauders on August 31, and appeared in two games for the Marauders. Began the 2017 with the West Virginia Power and was promoted to the Bradenton Marauders on May 8. Currently hitting .276/.371/.345 at Bradenton.

Cesilio Pimentel pitched in 29 games for the West Virginia in 2016. Selected by the Atlanta Braves from the Pittsburgh Pirates in the Rule 5 minor league draft on December 8, 2016. Pimentel was released by the Atlanta Braves on April 1, 2017. He is currently on the roster of the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks in the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball.

Eric Karch played briefly for the West Power at the beginning of the 2016 season before being released by the Pittsburgh Pirates organization on May 21, 2016. The Los Angeles Angels signed him to a minor league contract on June 2, 2016 and assigned him to the Burlington Bees (Class A Midwest League). He was assigned to the Inland Empire 66ers (Advanced A California League) on August 3, 2016. Karch is currently pitching for the Mobile BayBears in the AA Southern League.

Christian Kelley was assigned to the Class A West Virginia Power during the 2016, and was promoted to the Bradenton Marauders (Advanced A Florida State League) on August 10, 2016. He was a non-roster invitee to the Pittsburgh Pirates spring training this season and is currently playing for the Bradenton Marauders.

Sean Keselica played for the WV Power in 2016 before being promoted to the Bradenton Marauders on August 30, 2016. He is currently pitching for the Altoona Curve in the AA Eastern League.

Kevin Kramer, 2015

















     Kevin Kramer was originally assigned to the Black Bears after being selected in the second round of the 2015 draft. On August 25, 2015, he was promoted to the West Virginia Power. Kramer spent the entire 2016 season with the Bradenton Marauders and is currently playing for the Altoona Curve.

Seth McGarry was assigned to the Black Bears on July 13, 2015 from the Gulf Coast League Pirates (Rookie League). He spent the 2016 season the West Virginia Power and is pitching this season for the Bradenton Marauders.

Stephan Meyer began the 2015 season with the Gulf Coast Pirates and was assigned to the Black Bears on August 5, 2015. He pitched for Black Bears in 2016 and is currently at extended spring training at Pirate City in Bradenton.

Jonathan Minier was released by the Pittsburgh Pirates organization on March 28, 2016.

Ty Moore began the 2016 season with the West Virginia Power and returned to the Black Bears to finish the season. He was assigned to the West Virginia Power on April 11, 2017, from extended spring training. Moore was named to the 2015 New York-Penn League All Star game.

Carlos Munoz began the 2015 season with the Gulf Coast Pirates and was reassigned to the West Virginia Black Bears on August 29, 2015. He spent the entire 2016 season with the West Virginia Power and continues to play for them this season.

Luis Escobar is currently pitching for the West Virginia Power in the South Atlantic League after spending a second season with the West Virginia Black Bears in 2016.

Julio Eusebio is pitching in the Florida State League with the Bradenton Marauders this season after being assigned to the West Virginia Power in 2016.

Erik Forgione was released by the Pirates organization on March 27, 2017. He appeared in 49 games for the West Virginia Black Bears during the 2016 season.

Deybi Garcia was released by the Pirates organization on December 21, 2016, after playing for the Bristol Pirates in the Appalachian League during the 2016 season.

Hector Garcia was placed on the 7-day disabled list by the West Virginia Power on April 25, 2017. Spent the 2016 season with the Rookie League Gulf Coast Pirates

Tyler Glasnow is currently in the starting rotation for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He spent a rehab assignment with the Black Bears from June 19-26, 2015, pitching in two games.

Chris Harvey is assigned to the West Virginia Power in the South Atlantic League. Played for the West Virginia Black Bears in 2016. Was assigned briefly to the AAA Indianapolis Indians in August, 2016. Update: on May 11, 2017, Harvey was reassigned to the West Virginia Black Bears.

 Ke'Bryan Hayes is currently playing in the Florida State League with the Bradenton Marauders. Was injured much of the 2016 season while assigned to the West Virginia Power. Had a rehab assignment at the Gulf Coast Pirates.

Nick Hibbing did not play in 2016. According to Pirates Prospects, Hibbing retired, although the West Virginia Black Bears website shows him as active.

Logan Hill, 2015
Logan Hill is currently playing for the Bradenton Marauders. He played for the West Virginia Power during the 2016 season.

John Holdzkom rehabbed with the West Virginia Black Bears (from Indianapolis Indians) in July, 2015, pitching in two games. He was released by the Pittsburgh Pirates on April 11, 2016. Holdzkom signed a minor league contract with the Chicago White Sox on April 19, 2016 and was assigned to the AA Charlotte Knights. He is currently a free agent.

Dario Agrazal is currently pitching for the Bradenton Marauders. Spent the 2016 season with the West Virginia Power. Named to All Star team in 2015.

 David Andriese was released by the Pirates organization on November 6, 2015.

Daniel Arribas
Daniel Arribas is currently with the Bradenton Marauders. Spent the 2016 season with the West Virginia Power. Named to League All-Star teams in 2014, ’15, and ’16.


Alexis Bastardo
Alexis Bastardo is currently assigned to the West Virginia Power. Spent the 2016 season with the Bristol Pirates.
 
Albert Baur
Albert Baur is currently assigned to the West Virginia Power after spending the 2016 with the West Virginia Black Bears. On April 11, 2017, he was placed on the disabled list.

Jonathan Brubaker is  currently with the Altoona Curves (placed on 7 day disabled league on May 4) after spending time with the West Virginia Power and the Bradenton Marauders in 2016.
